History
It was the 12th February 1978 when Thailand Amateur Lady Golfers Association, or TALGA, was officially registered as an association to be in charge of ladies' golf activities in the country. Mom Kobkaew Abhakara Na Ayudhya headed the group of Founding Members from nine clubs. They were Rae-Vadee T. Suwan, the strategic planner and Princess Duangtipchote Abhakara, both from the Royal Bangkok Sports Club, Khunying Boobpha Hiranyastiti from the Royal Turf Club, Khunying Wally Virapriya from the Army Golf Club, Khun Rabieb Sukhanusart from the Air Force Golf Club, Dr. Ampica Polakla from the Royal Thai Navy Golf Club, Khun Paveena Sudasna from Dusit Golf Club, Mrs. Fuyumi Watanabe from the Japanese Golf Association, Mrs. Sheila Neville from the British Club and Khun Prasertsri Krupanich from Krungthep Kreeta Golf Club.
The Association applied to Thailand Golf Association as the 10th affiliated member. H.M. the late Queen Rambhai Barni graciously granted TALGA Her royal patronage and donated Her challenge cup for the Thailand Ladies Amateur Open Golf Championship. The inaugural tournament was played in February 1978 at the Rose Garden Golf Course and was won by M.R. Napasri Buranasiri, the niece of H.M. the late Queen herself. The Association's logo was designed by Rear Admiral Prachuab Polakla. It depicts a Thai style facade over a teed-up golf ball. A pink ribbon represents the color for Tuesday being H.M. Queen Rambhai Barni's Birthday. The year 1978 was the founding year of the Association. The name of the Association was amended in 1995 to Thailand Amateur Ladies Golf Association.
Within its first year TALGA had almost 100 ladies joining as members. Considering the fact that golf was then being played by only a limited number of the elite group, the Association made quite a progress in many directions in its early years. More ladies began taking up playing golf as a new sport and the Association helped to promote the interest by organizing tournaments and sending out teams to play overseas. Being exposed to overseas tournaments also brought about the idea to promote the game to a higher level, thus the launching of the annual Queen Sirikit Cup for the Asian Invitational Golf Team Championship. National teams from 9 countries joined the inaugural Queen Sirikit Cup Golf Team Championship that TALGA hosted in February 1979 at Navatanee Golf Course. The teams were from Japan, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, India, Sri Lanka, Korea and Thailand. Japan won the first Queen Sirikit Cup and also the second tournament in Indonesia.
Although the Thailand Amateur Ladies Open Golf and Inter-Club Team Championships are held on a biennial basis, the Queen Sirikit Cup for the national team championship is hosted annually among its 13 member countries on a rotation basis. The Queen Sirikit Cup brought about the need to promote of ladies golf on a long-term basis, as it became necessary to prepare a national team for other events such as the SEA Games, the Asian Games, the Espirito Santos Cup, as well as other Amateur Opens throughout the region. The Junior Development Fund was set up by TALGA in its 14th year, i.e., 1984, to subsidize the training program for the potential junior golfers to prepare them to represent the country.
In 1987 the Ladies Asia Golf Circuit was officially set up through the coordination of TALGA with the main sponsor, Kosaido Group of Companies from Japan. The circuit was sanctioned by the Asia-Pacific Golf Confederation and covered 5 countries, namely, Taiwan, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia. Singapore was replaced by the Philippines in 1997. The Ladies Asia Golf Circuit opened the way for top golfers to pursue their professional career in golf. The tournament also provides a good opportunity for top amateurs to play with the lady pros and learn from their skills. Although the Ladies Asia Golf Circuit has been played for 15 years, only a dozen TALGA members have since turned professional. This is due to the facts that professional golf is too tough a living for our Thai golfers to endure and take up as a career and not enough tournaments are held for lady pros.
Apart from TALGA's role in the promotion of ladies' golf at the international level, the Association conducts 10-12 local tournaments for members yearly. TALGA also sends out teams to play overseas to give its members the experience and exposure in the international field.
On its role for social contributions, TALGA has been active since its 3rd year of founding raising funds through its various activities, including Pro-Am tournaments, for the benefits of many worthy causes. Donations made by TALGA during the past 20 years amounted to more than 4 million baht, and were made to the Thai Red Cross, Sai Jai Thai Foundation, Chai Pattana Foundation, Phra Dabot Foundation, Ananda Mahidol Foundation, SUPPORT Foundation, and H.R.H. The Princess Mother's Volunteer Doctors' Foundation.
